IT BEGAN IN THE BUSH

Liam's love of nature, forged in the Australian bush, by the beach, and through his travels, serves as the foundation for McVeigh Made.

Natural timber not only tells a story, its carbon storage also plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change. A100kg recycled timber table stores 50kg of Co2 - meaning the longer your finished piece lasts, the longer it keeps Co2 out of our atmosphere.

In every McVeigh Made creation, you'll find Liam's dedication to sustainability. He leans heavily on recycled and FSC-approved plantation-grown timber, using only organic finishes and making a conscious effort to minimise waste in every part of the process.

ABOUT THE TIMBER

  • RED GUM

    or EUCALYPTUS CAMALDULENSIS

With deep red heartwood and slightly blonder sapwood, Red Gum is high in character, gum veins and interlocked grain. Whilst often gnarly and stubborn, when due care is taken, this timber can produce a colour and durability that is hard to match and is bound to make a statement in any space.

  • Ironbark

    or EUCALYPTUS SIDEROXYLON

Generally separated into ‘Grey’ or ‘Red’, this timber is among the most valuable and widely regarded of the Australian hardwoods. Dark brown with paler sapwood, or dark red with yellow sapwood respectively, both are incredibly dense, strong and durable, with a fine uniform texture and interlocking grain.

  • Vic Ash

    or EUCALYPTUS REGNAN

A trade name for Alpine Ash and Mountain Ash, the latter being the tallest Hardwood species in the world growing in excess of 90m in height. Relatively fast growing, and lighter and softer than most Eucalypts, Vic Ash is desirable for its long straight grain, stability workability, and beautiful blonde colour.

  • Messmate

    or EUCALPYTUS OBLIQUA

Often sold with Mountain Ash and labelled Tasmanian Oak, Messmate varies in colour from light browns to yellow blonds and is generally recognised for its dark gum veins and high feature. Often used for structural purposes it is one of the more available reclaimed timbers on the market.

  • Spotted Gum

    or CORYMBIA MACULATA

One of Australia’s most highly regarded hardwoods, Spotted Gum is extremely durable and its natural colour variation and grain figure make it desirable for structural and craft purposes. The heartwood ranges from light brown through to dark red while the Sapwood is usually white to light brown in colour.

SOURCING

McVeigh Made prioritises recycled materials whenever possible. We source from trusted local suppliers and collaborate with timber enthusiasts who understand the value and stories embedded in old-growth wood, often salvaged from personal collections or repurposed projects.

New timber is used only when absolutely necessary, but when it is, we rely on FSC or PEFC certified plantation-grown sources. This choice reflects our commitment to both sustainability and supporting responsible forestry practices within the construction industry - something we hope to see continue in years to come!
